The short answer
Plan on two coats for most rooms. That is the usual recommendation, and it gives an even color and a solid finish. One coat can be enough when you repaint the same color over clean walls in good shape. Going from a dark color to a light one often takes a primer or a third coat.
How many coats for your situation
| Situation | Coats to plan for |
|---|---|
| Same or very similar color, over clean walls in good shape | 1 or 2 |
| A new color of similar depth | 2 |
| Dark color to light color | Tinted primer plus 2 coats, or 3 coats without primer |
| New drywall or bare, porous surfaces | Primer plus 2 coats |
| Ceilings | 1, or 2 if there are stains to cover |
These are common guidelines, not rules. Your paint can may give its own advice, and some paints are sold as covering in fewer coats.
How coats change how much paint you buy
Every extra coat adds the same amount of paint again. Here is a 12 × 12 foot room with 8-foot ceilings, one door and two windows, using 350 sq ft per gallon and 10% extra. The paintable wall area is 333 sq ft.
| Coats | Math (sq ft × coats ÷ coverage) | Gallons needed | To buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 coat | 333 × 1 ÷ 350 | 1.05 | 1 gal + 1 qt |
| 2 coats | 333 × 2 ÷ 350 | 2.09 | 2 gal + 1 qt |
| 3 coats | 333 × 3 ÷ 350 | 3.14 | 3 gal + 1 qt |
The table shows the exact amount after the 10% allowance and the amount rounded up to the next quart. Change the number of coats in the paint calculator to see the amount for your own room.
Why the first coat can use more paint
Bare drywall and other porous surfaces absorb paint, so the first coat can use more than the label suggests. That is why primer or a higher allowance for waste helps on new surfaces. See how much a gallon of paint covers for typical figures by surface.
Tips for getting good coverage in fewer coats
- Clean and repair the walls first, so the paint has an even surface to stick to.
- Use primer on new drywall, stains and big color changes.
- Follow the recoat time printed on the can before you apply the next coat.
- Apply an even coat. Thin patches show through, and very thick coats use more paint than the label assumes.
Common questions
Is one coat of paint enough?
Sometimes. It can work when you repaint the same color over clean walls in good condition. For a new color, two coats is the safer plan.
Do I still need two coats if I use primer?
Usually yes. Primer prepares the surface, and most paints are still applied in two coats over it for an even finish.
How many coats do I need to go from dark to light?
Plan on a tinted primer plus two coats of paint, or three coats of paint if you skip the primer.
How many coats for a ceiling?
One coat is usually enough unless there are stains to cover.
